I'm happily addicted to Lavyrle Spencer. The way she weaves a storyline brings the characters to life. She reminds us that life is not always roses and butterflies, sometimes there is heartache. But, in the end, love conquers all.
Lavyrle Spencer has been my favorite author of fiction for many years. I can tell this is one of her earlier works because I've read books of hers that are even better-written, if that's possible. As an author, myself, I know that I improve with each novel. I'll be happy, if one day, I am half as good a writer as Spencer who is a master of the metaphor. Please keep writing, Ms. Spencer.
I read some of the reviews for this book and had to check again to make sure it was the same book I read. I have read this author many times and have enjoyed her books but Separate Beds was a new experience for me. I don't think I've disliked a heroine more than I did this one. I can dislike the hero and still enjoy the book but if the heroine is as unpleasant as this one was, it really disappoints. I'm glad others liked it but it just didn't float my goat. I know the word is 'boat' but I like 'goat' so much better.
I had this read in one night, it was a sweet good book. I was afraid it might not end good but it had a wonderful ending. The only thing I don't particularly like about Lavyrle Spencers books are the endings though they usually always end well seem to be cut off short. Its like you get to the end and it is a good ending but it just doesn't lend enough to what goes ahead. It happens fast and that's it...cut off. But other than they are usually good reads I enjoy them.
I saw SEPARATE BEDS mentioned in one of the romance threads and thought I would give it a try. Overall it was just an okay read for me. It wasn't horrible, but it's not a keeper for my bookshelf either. I gave it three stars because it was well written and I liked the plot. It was the characters and the last part of the book that kept this from being a four or five star read for me. They both had issues they were struggling with and that's okay. I like a little conflict and emotional turmoil in my reading as long as there's a resolution and happy ending.

I hated the fact that Clay took up with his ex-girlfriend even living with her while he and Catherine were separated. Even though Clay and Catherine got back together in the end I just didn't feel it. It seemed like they had been living separate lives and hadn't worked to resolve their issues. They just drifted back together and it seems like to me they could just as easily drift apart again.
This was written in the 1980's and so it was somewhat dated. They had a one night stand and she ended up pregnant. He was rich and she wasn't. He was wth another female when confronted by her family. They ended up in a marriage of convenience. But after the baby was born they did not seem to make the marriage work. But is all lost? I read the negative reviews and don't understand their rants. The marriage needed to go the way it did so both could understand the others point of view.
The characterizations in this book are mostly stereotypical, with very little nuance until Clay and Catherine approach the expected happy ending. The book apparently hasn't been updated in the 30-plus years since its original release. I admit, I liked the story better when it was new, when I was a teenager without much knowledge of law and even less of human relationships. Upon re-reading for nostalgia's sake with the benefit of more education and life experience,, it struck me how inaccurate the author's depiction of how criminal prosecution/defense takes place had been,

I would have liked the characters better this time around if Spencer had made Catherine less defensive, Clay less nonchalant. Jill was practically villainous, while Catherine's mother was pathetically weak and Herb was beyond redemption.

The book was still worth a re-read after so many years, but it didn't retain the fond spot it had in my mind..
