Offutt puts decent detail into his characters, the short stories were entertaining, and I always try to root for the home team. However, while E. KY and Appalachia are filled with characters, I found those that Offutt paints disappointing in that while entertaining, I did not find very convincing nor reflective of the regional culture or its citizens. There is a tendency to stereotype people from the region when in fact there is a rich diversity of personalities that I'm sure is difficult to portray. Unfortunately, I think this book tends to simply exploit and propagate many existing stereotypes that those less familiar with the area may find convincing.

Excellent
Amazing musical journey
I used to listen to this record (vinyl) like 20 years ago, so it is no surprise that I like it a lot, and it was a great delight to own it again.
A little bit out there, but yet so much realism and the dialect is fantastic.
Interesting, clever instrumental music. Great musicians
Because I love short stories and Southern writers, I discovered Chris Offutt. Out of the Woods was his first book I read. It won't be the last. His fiction is serious, his characters haunting. Haunting because of the writer's honesty. Offutt turns on the overhead light and throws off the sheet. His protagonist in "Two-Eleven All Around" sums up all of his characters when he ponders, "Sometimes I don't think I've done anything to leave my mark in this world. I'm the kind of person the world leaves a mark on." Offutt has left his mark.
I first heard and purchased this back in 1979. It was my first exposure to Oregon, and one of my favorite albums in those days I stupidly sold my vinyl copy some years ago, and after not having heard it in years, decided to order the cd. The recording quality is excellent, well worth the small investment.
