Anne Rice's sister, Alice Borchardt, has surpassed her. This book is excellently written. Set in dark ages Rome, the story is about a young woman that has the strange quirk of turning wolf. She is treated poorly and kept nearly-captive by her stepfather and brothers. They live in squalor despite the fact that they have some small claim to nobility. The story then focuses on her escape from her family, her reunion with her true father, and Roman politics.
This is a riveting start to a great series, and is the best of the three. The author capably makes the reader sympathetic with Regeane. This story is exciting and romantic. Despite its focus on werewolves, it is not a horror story. This is a very sympathetic series to wolves and werewolves. These days, most schoolchildren know that wolves are not inherently dangerous and evil creatures, and Borchardt's werewolves reflect this century's enlightened point of view. She surely must have watched many hours of The Nature Channel, because her descriptions of wolves are right-on.
I bought this off the shelf at a bookstore, and it did not disappoint me as so many other whim book purchases have. In fact, I have become a fan of Alice's writing and intend to read everything she puts out.

Reading the book you can really tell that Alice is Anne Rice’s sister. Their writing style is similarly lush. The writing creates a very vivid picture as you read the book, but the one thing I found lacking is that there is no real discussion of the exact time frame of the book. If you aren’t a student of history it is hard to tell when in history it takes place. At first it seems like it takes place in ancient Rome during the eras of the Caesars, but later into the book you meet another character who turns that on it’s head and you realize it is taking place sometime after the fall of the Roman Empire. That leaves you very confused, or at least it did me, because suddenly my image of the city and the way everyone was dressed was completely different.

Still, the characters were well flushed out, save perhaps the uncle and cousin. The main characters were all well written and their motives for all their actions clear and in character. They were relatable and likable and the story made you want to know more about them, especially the male lead. I did feel there were times when the plot was a bit slow. I kept expecting for the two leads to meet sooner in the book, even though I knew they didn’t since I’d read it before. That was a bit of a frustration because it almost made it seem like you were reading two different books at once. Because the two leads meet so close to the end, the book doesn’t feel like the end is the end. It feels more like you have just finished the first part of the book prior to its climax. Since it has two sequels, I suppose that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Despite the few irritants, I would recommend reading it anyway. The author has some really poignant quotes that make you think, and it really is a good read.
A well written paranormal romance with political storylines and a bit of creepyness but I like the characters and story. It is one I re-read from time to time.
I love to read. I am a huge fan of supernatural fiction. I have read all of Anne Rice's novels, I have read many werewolf and vampire novels. Based on the majority of good reviews I thought I would enjoy this book. Instead I found myself loathing to open the book. I gave up many times and it took me 20 times longer than I normally take to read a book.
I could care less about the main character or any other character. The story jumps all over is confusing and doesn't make any sense. The book is mainly a vehicle to write about violence and sex and isn't even very good at that. Romance what romance? Borchardt tries to cover up the bad plot, the meandering story line, and ridiculous characters with the subtext of history. The problem is the book is so out there that the history doesn't even seem realistic. These characters and their actions do not seem like ones you would expect in ancient rome.
Nothing was remotely satisfying about this book except for when I finished it.
If you are remotely hesitant to pick up this book then DON'T. It is horrible. You are not missing anything if you don't read it. If you like werewolves try Kelley Armstrong, or Laurell K Hamilton.
Give the author her due! Excellent character lines & plots throughout the book! I have read this book countless times! This lady can write as her sister Anne Rice can! Enjoy it yourselves! I did!
The story is about a girl who turns into a wolf a night. Her mother had died and she was living with a greedy, cruel uncle and his drunken son. They live in 6th century Rome, a crumbling city. It turns out that she is a distant relative of Charlemagne. He orders her to marry a nobleman who lives in a fortress guarding a mountain pass.

She has many Trials and tribulations. It is exciting to see her overcome them. She also has powers to speak to ghosts. She uses this power to save a friend who is dying. The characters are well drawn.

The only complaint I have is that the author writes a long exposition describing the wolf or girt traveling from one place to another. Not just what she sees but how it smells and the light. She is a beautiful writer, but after third multiple page description, I really wanted her to get on with the story. Also, would occasionally interrupt dialog with a multi paragraph description of a past memory or how she feels. An example is when she goes through this perilous journey to get to a garden where she will meet the being who will heal her friend, she literally names every flower in the garden and how it smells. And there are a lot of flowers. I would think since her friend is dying she would get to it.
